Self Max blocks the apps you choose until you have put in the time.
Set a rule, save your gym, and the apps you picked stay locked until you have been there long enough to unlock them. Self Max notices when you arrive and when you leave, even with the app closed.

Self Max needs Always location access to notice you arriving and leaving while it is closed. With While Using, it can only see your location when the app is open on screen. Check Settings › Self Max › Location.
Yes, with Always location access. iOS wakes Self Max when you cross the edge of your saved gym, so a whole visit is recorded without opening it.
Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us. On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name at the top, tap Subscriptions, choose Self Max and then Cancel Subscription. There is also a Manage Subscription link inside the app's Settings.
